THECONCERT VOICE OF AN ERA

-

The world knew singer Suman Kalyanpur as a voice that came closest to that of Lata Mangeshkar. But she has also sung several non-film songs. Kalyanpur, now 80, is more than a soundalike. She represents a style that singers have abandoned, but fans love.

Born Suman Hemmady, Kalyanpur enrolled for at the JJ School of Arts in

1950s but opted out after developing a paint allergy.

But she was destined to add colour to the arts. Her tuneful and transparent voice give songs a classical touch.

In the early sixties, the Lata /Rafi combination had broken up due to differences over royalty Filmmakers rushed to Kaly Rehman, Mala Sinha and Vyjayanthimala

The concert in her honour features Sadhana Sargam and Abhijeet. It will also feature Uttara Kelkar, Mugdha Vaishampayan, Archana Gore, Madhuri Karmarkar, Vidya Karalkikar and male singer Mandar Apte. A bonanza for fans.
