Ghosh wins a grand double in Chile

was double delight for paddler Soumyajit Ghosh as he bagged both the singles and doubles’ gold at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF Challenge Chile Open in Santiago.

While top-seeded Ghosh beat compatriot Anthony Amalraj 4-2 (8-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-7) in the singles final to clinch the title, he combined with Amalraj earlier to win the doubles title with a 4-0 (13-11 10-12 14-12 11 -9) win over Bulgaria’s Philipp Floritz and Romania’s Hunor Szocs.

This is the first time India has won a men’s doubles title on either the ITTF Challenge Series or ITTF World Tour.

BHAVEN, HRIDAY SHINE IN SCHOOLS CHESS

Bhaven Shah and Hriday Sheth set a record for India by winning a bronze medal each in the blitz format of the World Schools Chess Championsh­ips 2017 at Lasi, in Romania, on Sunday. Bhaven, a ninth standard student of Dhirubhai Ambani School, scored five out of possible seven points in the under-17 category while Hriday, a fourth standard student at the DY Patil School, scored 5.5 points out of possible seven.

SKEET SHOOTERS FAIL TO MAKE CUT FOR FINAL

India’s top shotgun shooters, aiming to earn points to cement their place for the yearend World Cup Finals, failed to make cut for the men’s skeet final in the ISSF World Cup in Larnaka, Cyprus on Monday.

Miaraj Ahmed Khan though began on a promising note with a series of 24, 25, 24, 25, but in the last and fifth round he missed three targets to score 22 for an aggregate of 120 out of possible 125. In the field of 94 shooters he overall finished 20th with only the top six advancing to the final.

Angad Vir Singh shot 118 to finish 30th, while Sheeraz Sheikh finished down the line.

MSSA SCORE OVER UTTARAKHAN­D

Mumbai School Sports Associatio­n posted a 3-1 win over Hockey Uttarakhan­d in Pool A match of the 7th Sub-junior National Hockey Championsh­ip 2017 ‘B’ Division. Arvind Yadav struck twice after MSSA opened through Rajveer Singh Dhariwala’s early goal. Hockey Uttarakhan­d’s pulled one back through Mitesh Singh.

In Pool D, Hockey Madhya Pradesh defeated Kerala Hockey 5-1 with Gaurav Tripathi notching a hat-trick.

PANDURANGA­IAH CUES INTO LAST-16 STAGE

Railways’ top seeded Panduranga­iah cruised past Lokesh 4-0 to advance to the last-16 stage of the R Murugesh & Chintamani Memorial All-india Open Snooker Tournament.

Panduranga­iah will next meet Coimbatore cueist Girish, who beat R Loganathan (TNBSA) 4-1.

In other matches, Rafath Habib (SRSA) blanked Dheeraj 4-0 and Kamal Chawla advanced when an ill S Magesh conceded.

AFTER SAINA, BIOPIC TO BE MADE ON SINDHU

After movies on Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar and Saina Nehwal, it’s time for another sports biopics. Ace shuttler PV Sindhu, the first Indian woman to bag a silver medal at the Olympics, is the latest athlete whose story is set to be portrayed at the big screen by actor-producer Sonu Sood.

Expressing her pleasure, Sindhu said she hopes this biopic would inspire people around the world.
