Now, BJP wants Marine Lines station to be called Mumbadevi

- HT Correspondent

the state government named the new railway station at Oshiwara as Ram Mandir and proposed to rename Elphinstone Road railway station as Prabhadevi, the BJP now wants Marine Lines railway station to be called Mumbadevi.

BJP MLA Raj Purohit met railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis last week with this demand. Both have reportedly agreed to consider the proposal.

Purohit wrote to the authoprities saying that since there is a 500-year-old temple of the deity in the vicinity, it would be appropriate to rename the station after it.

“As many Mumbai stations have been named after gods and goddesses whose temples are closer to the them, the worshipers and citizens of the area around Mumbadevi temple want Marine Lines station to be renamed. When I brought this to the notice of the CM and the railway minister, they promised appropriate action,” Purohit said.

The state Assembly has sent a proposal to the railway authorities asking that Elphinstone Road railway station be renamed as Prabhadevi, a deity of people in the area.

The Assembly passed a resolution approving the change in December last year. However, it still awaits the railway ministry’s nod.

Before that the newly built

station between Jogeshwari and Goregaon on the Western Railway was named Ram Mandir.

“All these stations were named in the colonial era and after English rulers. They have lost relevance now. Also, the proposed new names are getting tremendous support from the people. Mumbaiites also want Churchgate station to have a different name, but there should

be an appropriate alternative name to replace it with as it’s one of the city’s iconic stations,” said Raj Purohit. “The CM has also assured me that he would get the proposal passed in the legislature.”

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena has been demanding that Dadar railway station be renamed as Chaityabhoomi and Grant Road to Gamdevi.
