- Badri Chatterjee

Less than a week after Srinivas, the son of iconic tiger Jai, was found electrocuted at Naghbid forest range, another male adult tiger was found dead on Wednesday afternoon, just 60km away.

Forest officials said the tiger died in mysterious circumstances. A post-mortem could not reveal the exact cause of death as the carcass was found decomposed near Palebarsa village in Chandrapur.

“We cannot confirm the exact age of the tiger since all its visceral organs were decomposed and it could not be examined properly during the postmortem. It is, however, clear that the animal was an adult and between 7 and 12 years,” said Rajam Talmale, assistant conservator of forest, Chandrapur forest division.

So far, this is the second tiger to have died at the Chandrapur territorial forests this year. Of the six tiger deaths in the state this year, poachers were responsible for two.

Last year, nine tigers in Chandrapur and 16 in the state died. Of these, three were killed by poachers.

According to the forest department, the tiger’s carcass was found around 4pm near Bhoot Talab (a lake). It is likely that the tiger had come there to drink water before he died.
