After 2 yr delay, work on Mrinaltai Gore flyover to start in October

MUMBAI: After a delay of two years, the construction work to extend the Mrinaltai Gore flyover in the western suburbs will finally begin by October this year.

Once completed, this 800-metre-long patch will take the flyover up to Relief Road via SV Road in Goregaon (West).

The flyover, which currently is 1.2-kilometre long, connects Ram Mandir area in Jogeshwari (East) to SV Road in Goregaon (West), but was originally intended to go up to Relief Road.

While the first portion of the flyover was inaugurated in May 2016, the remaining 800 metrepatch was not constructed. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Thursday invited bids for construction of the extension. Slated to be completed within two years once construction work starts in October, the project is set to cost the civic body ₹161 crore.

“We have had to change the design to ensure it does not congest SV Road. The piers of the flyover fall on this road and there were concerns they will take up too much space in the alreadycongested road,” said a senior civic official from the bridges department. “That was one of the reasons this portion was not completed in 2016.” BMC has reduced the number of pillars supporting the bridge and their width.

The extension to the Mrinaltai Gore flyover has found mention in the BMC 2018-19 budget’s new projects section. The official further said, “This will be a tricky construction as an existing flyover needs to be extended without affecting the traffic in the area. Even though the tender process will be completed by August, work will start only after monsoon.”

ONCE COMPLETED, THE 800M PATCH WILL TAKE THE MRINALTAI GORE FLYOVER UP TO RELIEF ROAD VIA SV ROAD IN GOREGAON (WEST)
