MUMBAI: This monsoon, you might get more clarity during inclement weather on the operational status of your local trains on the Central Railway (CR) line.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is setting up weather monitoring stations inside stations on the network, which will relay hourly updates on rainfall to other government agencies.

All railway officials from the general manager to station masters and the motormen will be updated with the latest on the weather through live updates based on which they will restrict train movement.

This was decided in a monsoon-review meeting chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Officials from the army, the railways and municipal corporations were also present.

“We have informed railway officials to identify and determine land for setting up of weather stations. We will be receiving ‘Nowcast’ updates from the IMD and will determine local train operations,” said DK Sharma, general manager, central railway. The railways has identified 13 critical foot overbridges at Dadar, Parel, Currey Road, Chinchpokli, Ghatkopar and Kurla that will have extra staff to manage crowds. “259 Maharashtra security force jawans and 220 RPF and RPSF staff will be present at the stations.” said Sharma.
