MUMBAI: As parts of the city witnessed showers on Saturday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Ajoy Mehta asked all 24 ward officers and seven zonal deputy municipal commissioners to inspect their areas and remove impediments like barricades, roadside silt and unused machinery by June 4.

He has also asked them to record and submit photographic proofs of work completion. The BMC had originally set May 31 as the deadline to complete desilting and road-related work.

During a meeting with Mehta on Saturday, all BMC departments including health, disaster, roads and storm water drains presented their preparedness for the monsoon. Mehta issued specific instructions to ward officers, deputy municipal commissioners and additional municipal commissioners to ensure citizens do not face any difficulties.

Mehta also instructed officials to cover all manholes across the island city. This year, the BMC has identified 299 spots in the city that are prone to landslides — Bhandup tops the list with 161 spots, followed by Ghatkopar (32).

The BMC has also reserved 3,500 beds in government hospitals for patients coming in with monsoon-related ailments.

The civic body is also coordinating with the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Central and Western Railways.

A total of 436 water pumps (with 241 from MMRCL alone) will be put to work this monsoon to battle water-logging.
