22,000 STUDENTS TOOK THE SEMESTER EXAMS ONLINE, IN PLACE OF PENANDPAPER TESTS

MUMBAI: Around two lakh students at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIS) in the state are waiting for results of their semester examinations, which were conducted in February.

The results of the first and third semester exams were declared online in May, even though norms of the central government’s Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGE&T) require results to be declared within 40 days after exams. However, most students are yet to receive their mark sheets from DGE&T, which conducts the examinations.

One of the objectives of the online tests was to ensure timely declaration of the results, as the manual assessment of answer sheets took two to three months.

Earlier this week, a private ITI from the city wrote a letter to DGE&T, requesting for availability of the mark sheets. The letter was later endorsed by the Association of Non-government ITIS.

“We were told that the online exams will fasten declaration of results, but that hasn’t happened,” said Shrinivas Sapre, principal, Bombay Technical School of Engineering ITI, Girgaon, which is a member of the association. Principals and students said the absence of the third semester mark sheets of second year students will affect their internship prospects.

“We will soon start applying for apprenticeship, but we need mark sheets to do so,” said a student from Government ITI, Byculla. However, an official from state’s Directorate of Vocational Education said several first semester students have received their mark sheets.
