MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have arrested six men for cheating and posing as dummy candidates for writing the constablerecruitment exam.
They are on the lookout for four more suspects in the same case.
Additional commissioner of police, south region, Pravin Padwal, who was in charge for the written examinations, told HT, “Five cases have been registered against 10 persons at Malad, MHB, LT Marg, Bhandup and Vakola.”
Out of the six arrested, five were posing as candidates, while one was the person who hired a proxy candidate to be sent to the exam hall.
A police official at one of the examination centres said, “One of the arrested accused had forged the hall ticket with his photo. But we managed to catch his bluff. He and the candidate for whom he sat for the exam have been booked for forgery as well.”
In another case, the dummy was the friend of the candidate.
Most of the proxy candidates had started writing their exam when a check by invigilators revealed that a photo on the hall ticket did not match with the candidate’s face.
The written exam was being conducted for those candidates who had cleared the physical test.
Several thousands of people across Maharashtra apply for the job of a constable but only a small fraction manages to actually get it.
The five FIRS (for impersonation, cheating and forgery) have been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University and Examination Act.
