INFANT DIES AFTER PILLAR FALLS ON HIM IN THANE

THANE: An eight-month-old boy died after an iron pillar fell on him while he was playing outside his house at Shrinagar in Thane on Wednesday. Police have arrested a truck driver, Dinkar Mane, 36, in the case. Mane took a reverse turn and hit the pillar, which fell on the baby. The victim, identified as Sultan Usman Naik, was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead. Mane was booked for negligence and rash driving under Motor Vehicles Act. He has been sent to magistrate custody after being produced in the court.

Motorman crosses red signal, harbour line hit

MUMBAI: The local train services on the Harbour line were disrupted for 20 minutes on Thursday evening after the motorman of a 7.59pm Vashi local allegedly crossed the red signal near Wadala railway station. Due to the disruption, Kurla station became overcrowde­d, forcing Railway Protection Force officers to clear the crowd.

Vile Parle’s Mithibai college gets autonomous status

MUMBAI: More than two months after the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted autonomy to SVKM’S Mithibai College in Vile Parle, the University of Mumbai finally completed the autonomy process. This means the college can implement its autonomous status from the 2018-19 academic year. SIES College of Arts, Science & Commerce secured autonomous status on May 28. The college has been granted autonomous status till 2027-28.

32yearold arrested for stabbing wife in Andheri

MUMBAI: The Andheri police on Wednesday night arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly stabbing his wife who works as a receptioni­st at a clinic on Nagardas road in Andheri (East). According to police, the accused, Afzal Shaikh, went to the clinic on Tuesday evening where the woman was on her desk and stabbed her four to five times.the man escaped from the spot after attacking the victim. Police tracked Shaikh on Wednesday night near Kalyan-mumbra and arrested him.

Dog beaten to death after it bites 65 pedestrian­s

KOLHAPUR: Sixty-five pedestrian­s in Kolhapur were bitten by a rabid dog on Wednesday. While the wounded were rushed to hospital, the dog was beaten to death by a group of youth.

Three die in separate accidents in Kolhapur

KOLHAPUR: Three people were killed in separate accidents on Wednesday in the city. Nikhil Ramane, 27, died after his bike was dashed by a truck near Murgud in Kolhapur district, while Nitin Kamble, 28, died after his bike was hit by a car near Madgaon. Bajiraon Salokhe, a labourer died after he fell from a constructi­on site in MIDC.
