7 police teams to track wine shop owner’s killers

- Sajnishsingh Chavla

MUMBAI: The Vanrai police investigating the murder of a wine shop owner, who was shot dead in Goregaon (East) on Sunday night, have formed seven teams to crack the case.

Meanwhile, a cousin of the victim said they are “unhappy” with the delay in giving medical treatment to Sajnishsingh Chavla at the government hospital.

The Vanrai police said they have formed seven special teams headed by a senior officer with handpicked officers from police stations in the north region to crack the case.

The local crime branch unit, too, is conducting a parallel probe. Chavla, 47, was shot dead around 11.20pm near Virvani Industrial Estate in Goregaon (East) on Sunday. Chavla was heading home with his colleague Kamlesh Yadav, 35, after shutting down his wine shop when the incident took place.

The duo was carrying cash of around ₹4 lakh in their bags and was only 100 metres away from the shop when two unidentified men wearing masks approached them. A police official said, “One man shot Chavla from behind on his head, took the bag and fled from the spot.” Yadav, who was walking behind Chavla at some distance, escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, one of Chavla’s cousins said on condition of anonymity, “At this point we do not suspect anyone. We cannot say if it was robbery or done due to personal enmity. Sajnish (Chavla) did not have enmity with anyone. However, we are unhappy the police did not rush him to a good hospital. At the government hospital, we were made to wait for one hour and later informed that they were not equipped to treat him. We then shifted him to Kokilaben hospital, but he succumbed to injuries.”
