Two pose as cops, rob Dharavi woman of gold chain; one held

MUMBAI: The Shahu Nagar police in Dharavi arrested a 40-year-old man on Monday for pretending to be a policeman and duping a 68-year-old retired nurse of a gold chain worth ₹60,000. He has been identified as Ganesh Kumar Jaiservar.

The incident came into light when the woman told police sub-inspectors Wasim Shaikh and Tukaram Dige from the patrolling team of Shahu Nagar police station that two people, moving around in safari suits, had fled away with her gold chain.

The police succeeded in nabbing one of them but the other managed to flee away. The chain has been recovered.

Jaiservar is a Dharavi resident and works as a real estate agent. The complainant, Vanita Dhanavde, said the incident took place between 11 and 11.30am when she was returning from a hospital located in Mahim East and was looking for a medical store.

DB Thorat, senior police inspector, said, “Two men wearing safari suits and black shoes approached the complainant. They told her that they are policemen and that there are robbers in the area targeting senior citizens and children. The men told Dhanavde to remove her jewellery and hand it over to them so they could keep it safe.”

“The complainant claimed that she was probably hypnotised for five minutes, due to which she gave her chain to the men,” the officer said.

A week ago, a similar incident had taken place near the police station, following which the police had increased patrolling between 10am and 12pm.
