Farmers may get weekly markets at 24 spots in city
MUMBAI: In a bid to provide direct platforms for farmers to sell their produce, Mumbai mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to identify 24 spots across the city at which weekly markets would be set up. In a press release from the BMC, Mahadeshwar said, “I have asked the zonal deputy municipal commissioners (DMCS) to make a list of areas where the farmers can put up stalls for weekly markets without blocking the roads.”
The weekly market idea came up after farmers were stopped by officials from setting up temporary stalls on a Kandivali plot and later dumped the vegetables outside Mantralaya, in April. Udhav Thackeray later met civic chief asking for weekly markets to be set up.
