Top floors...

“Fire-fighting took place using the building’s equipment.” The building’s riser system had a capacity to hold one lakh litres of water. Among other factors that slowed down work was the building’s fire lift, which stopped working when water from the sprinklers seeped into it. The 20 firemen fighting the blaze on the top three floors had to climb up 33 floors for operations.

“The wind also proved a challenge,” said Chaudhari. “It kept reigniting the flames from embers burning on the furniture. Even if the pipes from water tankers would reach the 32nd floor, the wind would not allow us to spray water into the distance at that height.”

A resident of the building, who did not wish to be named said, “The building had an advanced fire-fighting system, with separate electric connections to run the equipment in case of an emergency where the electric supply has to be cut off. We also have turbo pumps for the riser system, so water can quickly be dispensed to the top floors, within seconds. All of this helped.”

Another resident said, “The fire alarm went off as soon as the fire started. That is how all residents were alerted and evacuated. Security personnel from the building also went to every floor and knocked on all doors, to make sure no one was left behind.”

Deepika Padukone later took to Twitter to say she was safe. “Thankyou every one. Let us pray for our fire-fighters who are at site risking their lives.” try to revisit the proposal and suggest what could be done within a week,” said a fourth official.

The panel also decided to allow the ministry of external affairs to put summons, which are issued to NRI men who have not responded to earlier summons, on the ministry’s website. Such notices were to be treated as “deemed to have been served”.

The Union home ministry has already agreed to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure that will allow notification of summons put on the website of the ministry of external affairs to be treated as “deemed to have been served”.

The current practice is that once a woman files a complaint, the police writes to embassies, which sends a summon. Such summons hardly get served as the person usually moves to a new place or provides an incorrect address.

The panel was set up after a sharp rise in the number of NRI men deserting their wives after marrying them in India. The complaints ranged from grooms who disappeared to husbands who were preventing their wives from travelling to India.

In comparison, The National Commission for Women (NCW), an autonomous body under the WCD ministry, recorded 346 complaints from women married to NRIS in 2014. killed 19 people and injured 67, besides displacing over 100,000 people from the border areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts since May 15. So far this year, 52 people, including 26 security personnel, have been killed on the Line of Control and the international border in the Jammu region.
