MUMBAI:THE Pant Nagar police have registered a criminal case against the chairman and secretary of the housing society in connection with the lift collapse in a Ghatkopar (East) building.

Police stated that it was the responsibility of the society committee to ensure the maintenance of the lift. Four persons including three women were injured when an elevator collapsed from the fourth floor of a seven-storey building in Ghatkopar (East) on Monday evening.

After investigations, the Pant Nagar police have registered a case under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. “There should have been maintenance of the lift,” said Rohini Kale, senior police inspector, Pant Nagar police station. “The society alleges that the residents do not pay the maintenance. If the lift was defective, they should have kept it closed,” he added.

The police have recorded the statements of the injured and are investigating if there was any negligence. The public works department (PWD) and the fire brigade have inspected the lift. “We are awaiting reports from the government agencies in this regard,” said Kale adding that the findings will be incorporated in the first information report (FIR).

The preliminary investigations revealed that the elevator wire rope snapped which led to the elevator fall. The injured four were coming down from the lift when the incident occurred in the evening. They were rushed to a government hospital thereafter.
