14-yr-old jumps to her death in Kandivli

MUMBAI: A 14-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of a housing society in Kandivli (East) on Thursday evening.

The incident took place around 4.30pm in Orchid society at Gardenia Cooperativ­e Housing Society in Thakur Village, said the Samta Nagar police, who have registered a case.

The deceased was a Class 9 student and lived in another building nearby, the police said.

She gained access to the refuge area of the high-rise from where she jumped.

Several people spotted her on the edge and called out to her, telling her not to jump.

The suicide was recorded on video by a number of eye witnesses and has since gone viral on social media.

After she jumped and injured herself, she was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

One of the onlookers who recorded the incident was Chetan Piwal, a tattoo artist who lives in the area.

“I wanted to save her life, but it all happened in two minutes,” said Piwal.

Vinay Rathod, deputy commission­er of police, zone 12, said: “We don’t know why she took this extreme step. We have registered an accidental death report. We will investigat­e the case thoroughly. We have not found any suicide note. We are probing to find out if anyone abetted her suicide.”

An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at Samata Nagar police station.

The police are inquiring about the incident with the victim’s relatives and friends. They said that they will examine her mobile phone and other gadgets, as well as go through her social media activities.
