MUMBAI: A 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly brutally killing another man in Govandi after the victim teased the accused about his hair colour.

Kumer Sayed alias Shahrukh, 23, who was arrested by the Mumbai crime branch unit 6 alleged that the victim Mohammed Hussain Abdul Halim Shaikh, 25, often teased him about his hair colour, which irritated him.

According to police, the complainant Abdul Halim Shaikh, 55, is father of the victim. He said the accused and the victim were known to each other. On Saturday, while they were hanging out with a group of friends, Mohammed started touching Sayed’s coloured hair and making fun of it. This irritated Sayed and he stabbed Mohammed with a knife, in a fit of rage. “Mohammed was stabbed with a sharp weapon on his throat, hands, back and other body parts. He was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to injuries,” said a police officer.

The Shivaji Nagar police had registered a case under section 302 (punishment for Murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sayed, who is a part time autorickshaw driver, fled from the spot after stabbing Mohammed and also switched off his mobile phone, police said. A team was formed by the crime branch unit 6, who started tracing Sayed with the help of informers.

“Sayed took a motorcycle and fled to Navi Mumbai. Through sources, we found that he was coming through the Vikhrolighatkopar route to Tilak Nagar railway station to board an outstation train. A trap was laid and he was arrested within eight hours of the crime,” said an official from unit 6, Mumbai crime branch.
