MUMBAI: A 49-year-old man from Dongri has registered a case against his neighbour for killing his pet cat. The complainant claimed that his 40-year-old neighbour put the pet in a plastic bag and threw it in the dustbin, due to which the cat died of suffocation. The Dongri police have registered a case against the accused and are investigating the matter.

According to police, complainant Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh, a resident of Bhendi Bazar had adopted the cat off the streets in 2016. The complainant claimed he would let his cat outside his house to roam during the day and take it back inside the apartment by night. But on May 27, after he let his cat out, it did not return.

“I searched around for my cat but didn’t find it. I suspected my neighbour had something to do with it because last year too, he had packed my cat in a sack and attempted to throw it away. When the cat went missing again, I approached the Dongri police,” said Shaikh.

The complainant asked other residents of the building if they had seen his cat. “I got to know a helper in our building, was involved in the act. I took him to the police, following which he narrated the entire incident to the officers. Police then registered a case on June 26,” Shaikh said .

Sandeep Bhagdikar, senior police inspector, Dongri police station said, “A case has been registered on basis of the statement given by Shaikh and the helper. We are investigating the matter and facts will be verified accordingly.”
