CITY GOT 51.5% SURPLUS RAIN IN JUNE: IMD

-

MUMBAI : This June, the city has recorded 792.5mm rain, 51.5% excess, compared to its average of 523.1mm for the month. Last year, the city got 523mm rain in June.

The monsoon entered the city on June 9, with south Mumbai receiving 164mm rain and the suburbs recording 100.1mm over 24 hours. The highest amount of rain in June was recorded between June 24 and June 25, when the city got 231.4mm rain, its third highest all-time 24-hour June rainfall. “The city got good rain during the first month of the monsoon. However, there are records of more than 1000mm in June itself. Rainfall has been consistent with good distribution and has happened over a long span of time rather than heavy rain at a few places and in short bursts,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

From June 1 to 8.30am on July 1, the city recorded 794.2mm rain, which is 37% of the season’s mean rainfall (2164.8mm) and 35% of the annual average rainfall (2258mm). While a majority of the state has recorded excess or normal rain in June, four districts – Bhandara, Jalna, Gondia and Buldhana – recorded deficient rainfall. “We have issued heavy rainfall warnings for isolated areas in and around Mumbai and rest of north Konkan for the coming week. More rainfall is expected in south Konkan regions. Mumbai can expect moderate showers,” said Hosalikar.

With no rain over the weekend, the day temperature increased to 33 degrees Celsius in Santacruz, 2.5 degrees above normal, and 31.5 degrees Celsius in Colaba, 1.1 degrees above normal.
