NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday granted ‘Institutio­ns of Emine- nce’ (IOE) status to three public and three private institutes, giving them autonomy in a range of activities and, additional­ly, for public universiti­es, more money. As reported by HT on July 7, the government has granted IOE status to Iit-delhi, Iit-bombay and the Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in the public sector, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS, Pilani and Jio Institute promoted by the Reliance Foundation in the private sector.

Kansas police yet to trace killer of 26yearold Indian

WASHINGTON: Kansas City police are still looking for the killer of Sharath Koppu, the 26-year-old Indian student fatally shot at a restaurant last week, and haven’t made much headway despite announcing a reward of $10,000 for informatio­n leading to an arrest. “There have been no other developmen­ts,” Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for Kansas City police, said in an email. “As of Sunday we had received three tips. We are still working with media to circulate the surveillan­ce video.” Witnesses have said the lone suspect was wearing a brown shirt with white stripes.

ASI suspended for touching feet of Punjab minister

BATALA: Punjab cabinet minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa on Monday ordered suspension of an assistant sub-inspector of police posted at Fatehgarh Churrian for touching his feet and seeking a favour from him at his residence. Batala SSP Opinderjee­t Singh Ghuman confirmed he had got orders from his seniors to suspend ASI Palwainder Singh. Bajwa has put up a notice outside his house, asking visitors not to touch his feet.
