Truck topples on auto in Bhiwandi, passenger dies, four injured

KALYAN:A 40-year-old passenger died and four others were injured after a truck toppled on an autoricksh­aw at Kongaon, Bhiwandi, on Tuesday.

The Kongaon police arrested the truck driver, Maqtul Hussaini Makandar, 24, a resident of Karnataka, and have a registered a case against him under relevant sections of IPC.

The auto driver, Mumtaz Ahmad Ansari, 32, and the passengers, Ramprakash Narang, a resident of Kalyan, Sachin Baviskar, a Badlapur resident, and Vishnu Karalkar, from Ambernath and Hasim Haneef Shaikh, 40, a resident of Doodh naka, Kalyan (West) were taken to a nearby private hospital.

Shaikh, who had sustained head injuries, died during treatment. Karalkar, who has also suffered severe head injuries, is on ventilator.

“The truck, which was carrying sacks full of animal fodder, fell on the autoricksh­aw. It lost control after hitting a pothole,” said R Katkar, senior police inspector, Kongaon police station.

The autoricksh­aw was carrying four passengers — three seated at the back and one beside the auto driver — was going to Bhiwandi from Kalyan. When the auto reached Kongaon police chowky on Bhiwandi bypass, the truck lost control and fell on the moving autoricksh­aw.

“The auto driver managed to jump out. The passenger got stuck inside the auto. Most of them suffered head injuries,” said Narendra Pawar, assistant police inspector, Kongaon police station. The truck driver was immediatel­y arrested.
