Students of NMIMS protest strict rules

- Shreya Bhandary

MUMBAI: Around 50 students of second-year Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) have objected to the decision of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) to not promote them to final year.

Students blamed strict re-evaluation policy which led to more students failing the exam. A statement by NMIMS’S spokesperson says rules of attendance and re-evaluation have been in place in the institute for over 10 years.

“All universities follow a minimum aggregate of 35% to pass a subject but at NMIMS, it is 50%. Students are allowed 3% grace marks, which is not fair,” said a student requesting anonymity.

Students and parents have approached the University Grants Commission and All India Council Technical Education. “Minimum attendance is 80% which many outstation students have not got. The institute has not shown mercy,” said a parent.

While students are claiming that more than 50 students have not been promoted to final year, the institute said only 24 BBA students were not promoted. “The passing and attendance norms are clarified to students at the beginning of the year and have been in place for more than 10 years,” said Rajan Saxena, vicechancellor, NMIMS.

When parents asked why grace marks are not given for extra-curricular activities, he said, “There are no national norms for grace marks. We at NMIMS consider grace marks a disgrace and expect students to earn their credits instead.”
