TRANSPORTE­RS’ STRIKE LIKELY TO CONTINUE

MUMBAI : With the nationwide transporte­rs’ strike entering its seventh day on Thursday, their representa­tive apex body has decided to continue staying off the roads in the absence of any dialogue with the union government. “Even on the sixth day, there has been no reconcilia­tory talk or indication from the government to resolve the issues with immediate tangible results. The movement will intensify in the days to come,” read an official statement from the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), adding that the transport sector has suffered a loss of ₹24,000 crores in the past six days. The transporte­rs’ strike coupled with the Maratha agitation is likely to affect the city’s supply of essential commoditie­s such as fruits and vegetables on Thursday as well. The Mathadi Transport Union that represents to workers involved in loading and unloading truck goods at the Agricultur­al Produce Market Committee in Navi Mumbai also extended its support to the strike. The AIMTC is firm that it will not call off the strike unless the government fulfils the demands of transporte­rs. Lakhs of trucks, tempos, tankers and other goods vehicles across Maharashtr­a have been on strike since July 20, demanding a reduction in diesel price and a premium in third-party insurance, among other issues.

Two help woman perform ‘black magic’, one held

MUMBAI : The police on Monday arrested a man for duping a woman from Charkop of ₹20,000. The woman had approached the accused, and his accomplice who is absconding, seeking help to perform black magic on her husband in order to “control” him. The two have been booked under the Maharashtr­a Prevention and Eradicatio­n of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013 or Black Magic Act.

Two break into Sewri shop, steal ₹8lakh, arrested

MUMBAI : The police arrested two people for breaking into a cutlery shop at Abdul Rehman Street in Sewri and decamping with an iron locker, which contained cash worth ₹8 lakh from the locker on Sunday. The accused have been identified as Nadeem Shakir

Khan, 22, and Mohammed Nafees Noor Mohammed Shaikh, 20.
