Car flips twice after collision with dumper, falls in gorge

NAVI MUMBAI: Two men heading to Mumbai escaped with minor injuries after their car was hit by a dumper near Vashi creek bridge on Thursday. The car flipped twice after the collision, before falling to a 15-ft gorge near the creek.

The dumper driver, Shivprasad Gupta, 30, was arrested later. According to the police, Sunil Naik, a 60-year-old resident of Kharghar and N Pawar, a 45-year-old resident of Sanpada, were travelling to Mumbai to attend the final rites of one of their friends’ mother. As they were approachin­g Vashi toll naka on Sion-panvel highway, the dumper which was also moving in the same direction, hit the car from behind. “The accident took place around 500m away from the toll naka. After it was hit by the dumper, the car flew off the highway and fell into the gorge,” said Prabhakar Shirurkar, assistant inspector, Vashi police station.

Gupta left his the vehicle on a side of the highway and ran to the police station, said Shirurkar. “We reached the spot in no time and rescued those stuck in the car. The car was also pulled out from the gorge,” he said.

According to Shirurkar, Gupta was eating a vada pav while driving. “He was hungry and was eating while driving, which may have diverted his attention, leading to the collision,” he said.

Gupta has been booked under sections 279, 337 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Naik and Pawar were rushed to a nearby hospital and were discharged hours later.
