TRUCKERS STRIKE ENDS AS CENTRE RELENTS
NEW DELHI: The eight-day long nation-wide truckers strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) was called off on Friday after the government agreed to accept some of their demands, including the constitution of a high-level committee to look into the pending demands. The decision to call off the strike, which began on July 20, was taken after discussions by the representatives of AIMTC with Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari and finance minister Piyush Goyal. Some of their pending demands include e-way bill implementation, GST related issues of the transport sector, simplifying the national permit rules for goods vehicles and increasing the validity of fitness certificates for vehicles. Welcoming the AIMTC’S move, Gadkari tweeted that the government has constituted a high-level committee to look into the truckers demands. “We are sensitive to the transporters demand,” he tweeted.
Cyberbullying of student who sold fish to be probed
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday ordered a probe into the cyber bullying of a woman college student in Kochi who sells fish for a living after college hours. The student, Hanan Hamid , 21, was targeted by trolls who said she was putting on an act. Hamid took them on with a “why me” retort. Vijayan directed the Ernakulam district collector to provide help to Hamid and the Kochi Corporation promised to give her a kiosk to vend fish . Vijayan said her endeavour to support her family and pursue her studies at the same time was a matter of pride.
Ramgarh lynching accused electrocuted
RANCHI : One of the 11 convicts of the lynching case in Ramgarh district, who was granted bail by the Jharkhand high court last month, died of electrocution. Ramgarh superintendent of police A Vijayalakshmi said, “Sikandar Ram was electrocuted near his home in Bazar Tand .” Police said Ram was walking towards the market from his home, when he came in touch with a live wire. His body has been sent for autopsy. A fast track court in March 2018 had sentenced Ram and ten others to life imprisonment for lynching 40-year-old Alimuddin Ansari on June 29 last year.
