HIGH TREASON TRIAL OF PERVEZ MUSHARRAF TO RESUME THIS WEEK

ISLAMABAD: A special court in Pakistan is all set to resume hearing of a high treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, which may also be a big test for Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf, which is likely to form a government, a media report said on Sunday. Lahore high court chief justice Yawar Ali, who is heading the three-judge special tribunal, will visit Islamabad for three days from July 31 to August 2. The Express Tribune reported the purpose of his visit is to hear the high treason case lodged against Musharraf soon after the PML-N came to power in 2013 for his role in the promulgati­on of emergency on November 3, 2007. However, the prosecutio­n has yet to get any informatio­n regarding fixation of the case.

US: 3 dead, 7 wounded after gunmen fire on crowd

NEW ORLEANS: Two armed individual­s wearing hoodies walked up to a crowd gathered Saturday evening outside a strip mall in New Orleans and opened fire, killing three people and wounding seven more, the police said. Police chief Michael Harrison said one of the shooters had a rifle and the other a handgun. He said they appeared to have fired indiscrimi­nately into the crowd, striking ten people. AP

Nigeria Army kills 16 Boko Haram militants in north

MAIDUGURI: Nigeria’s military said soldiers have killed at least 16 Boko Haram extremists after an attack in the country’s northern Borno state. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, deputy director of Army Public Relations, said on Sunday that insurgents in three vehicles, including gun trucks, on Friday attacked the Mairari area village of Monguno. He said that soldiers and the air force responded, killing at least 16 extremists.

Powerful storm hits disasterra­vaged Japan

TOKYO: A powerful storm slammed into Japan on Sunday, churning across western areas already hard hit by floods and landslides earlier this month and injuring some 20 people. Typhoon Jongdari, with winds of up to 180 kilometres an hour, made landfall at Ise in Mie prefecture at around 1 am, according to the meteorolog­ical agency. More than 170 flights were cancelled for Sunday and train services disrupted.

Spain rescues over 200 migrants at sea

MADRID: Spain said it had plucked more than 200 migrants from the Mediterran­ean Sea on Sunday as the country’s interior minister headed to Mauritania to try to boost cooperatio­n in the fight against illegal immigratio­n. Spain’s maritime rescue service saved 211 migrants from 21 different boats in the Strait of Gibraltar which separates Spain from Morocco, a spokesman for the service said.
