Manager hits out at United’s failure to bolster their resources, seeks more signings before season starts

for expressing his feelings without much of a filter. His direct approach while criticising rival managers and players has led to several controversies over the years.

But the biggest effect has been felt by his players, especially the biggest stars on his roster when they fail to perform. And this has often led to divisions or discontent in the dressing room.

GOADING PLAYERS

The most recent case of his tearing into his own players was that of World Cup winner Paul Pogba (in pic). In an interview with ESPN, Mourinho said: “I don’t think it’s about us getting the best out of him. It’s about him giving the best he has to give.”

Maybe this is Mourinho’s way of pushing Pogba to do better, but publically undermining the midfielder’s commitment to the club may cause more problems than provide motivation.

WORLD CUP WOES

Since the end of the World Cup and the start of the pre-season, one of Mourinho’s biggest problems seems to be the absence of several key players. Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, among others, have been granted additional leave given their exertions at the World Cup. Mourinho is clearly unhappy with this situation and has not minced words while expressing himself. Despite spending £361.6 million in his two years at the helm at Manchester United, Mourinho recently expressed his desire to make at least two more signings in this transfer window. Mourinho says he has given the club bosses five names and hopes to get at least one of them.

Among the biggest names linked to the club is that of Leicester City’s English defender Harry Maguire (in pic), who excelled at the World Cup. Mourinho has long been on the look-out for a solid central defender. Barcelona’s Colombian defender Yerry Mina, Toby Alderweireld and Leonardo Bonucci are other names.

INJURY SET-BACKS

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial left the team’s pre-season tour of the United States to attend the birth of his second child in Paris, where he has remained since the arrival of his son.

And

Mourinho did not hide his annoyance with the Frenchman.

To make matters worse, midfielder Nemanja Matic (in pic) and Antonio Valencia will also miss the start of the season after picking up injuries in the World Cup and pre-season respectively.
