FDI RULES VIOLATION: DELHI HC SEEKS REPLY FROM CENTRE, FLIPKART, AMAZON

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday sought response from the Centre, Flipkart and Amazon on a plea which alleged open violation of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rules by the e-commerce websites. A bench of acting chief justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notices and sought to know their stand fixing November 19 as the next date of hearing. The plea filed by an NGO, Telecom Watchdog, has sought that legal proceeding­s be initiated against the two e-commerce giants under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) for alleged violation and circumvent­ion of FDI. “The FDI rules for marketplac­e model of e-commerce have been circumvent­ed by Amazon & Flipkart through their “Controlled Sellers” or “Name Lenders”,” the plea alleged adding they are not to exercise ownership over the stock, nor directly or indirectly influence price of goods and services sold on their marketplac­e.

Photocopie­s of doctors’ degrees sold for ₹40,000

GORAKHPUR: Some unidentifi­ed people stole photocopie­s of doctors’ degrees from the Baba Raghav Das Medical College office in Gorakhpur and sold them to others who used these papers to run two fake pathology labs, people familiar with the matter said. The fake pathology labs were being run for years, illegally using the names and registrati­on numbers of two women doctors posted as lecturers at the medical college’s department of pathology. The police lodged an FIR on the basis of a complaint by the college authoritie­s, SSP Shalabh Mathur said.

Uttarakhan­d to ban plastic bags, cutlery from tomorrow

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhan­d will ban plastic carry bags and disposable cutlery items made of plastic and thermocol from August 1. The Uttarakhan­d high court in its December 2016 order put a blanket ban on sale, purchase and use of plastic. The court also banned entry of carry bags by any means of transport viz bus, trains and air. Thereafter, a government order (GO) was issued on January 25, 2017.

Sterlite plant will not be reopened: Official

CHENNAI: Thoothukku­di district administra­tion on Monday reiterated that controvers­ial Vedanta owned Sterlite copper smelter unit will not be reopened again and urged people to disbelieve rumours being circulated in this regard both on and offline. The plant was closed on May 28 soon after the death of 13 people who were killed by police firing on May 22 while protesting against the plant. According to Sandeep Nanduri, collector, Thoothukku­di district, the state government had taken a policy decision in closing the Sterlite copper smelter.

Kerala police to interrogat­e Jalandhar Bishop this week

THIRUVANAN­THAPURAM: The Kerala police will send a team to Jalandhar in Punjab this week to question Bishop Franc Mullakkal allegedly involved in sexually exploiting a nun of the same congregati­on over two years, a senior official of the investigat­ing team said. The police have decided to speed up the probe after criticism over delay in questionin­g the Jalandhar Bishop. Marxist veteran V S Achuthanan­dan and several activists had questioned “inordinate delay” in arresting him.

CBI Academy gets third cyber crime laboratory

GHAZIABAD: In a major boost to its training capabiliti­es in the area of cyber crime, the CBI has added third state-of-the-art laboratory in its academy in Ghaziabad to prepare its cadets for challenges arising from complex world of digital crimes. The new facilities have been inaugurate­d by CBI director Alok Verma. The academy which trains officials for their service in the CBI and other agencies of the country and abroad remains key component of training, the officials said.
