MUMBAI :A goat that the Central Railway (CR) had auctioned for ₹2,500 on August 2 will finally find a home as it has been handed over to animal rights outfit, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The goat will be taken to an animal shelter in Sangli.

“We have taken custody of the goat. We have given ₹2,500 to the owner Abdul for the goat and have also given ₹2,500 towards medical treatment to the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(bspca). We will be taking the goat to an animal shelter in Sangli,” said Meet Ashar, emergency response coordinator, PETA.

On Wednesday, CR caught a person at Masjid Bunder station transporting a goat, but he fled leaving the animal there.

CR officials on Thursday auctioned the goat, which was purchased by one Abdul Rehman for ₹2,500.

The auction had landed the CR officials in a soup.

Animal rights organisations PETA and People for Animals headed by Union minister Maneka Gandhi raising questions on auctioning a live animal, which is not permissible under the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act 1960.

PETA had contacted CR and questioned why there was no check-up of the goat by a veterinary doctor.

It also said the animal was tied, which is prohibited under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.

Officials said that following this, CR staff hurriedly took the goat on Friday evening to the BSPCA.
