Serena Williams struggling with ‘postpartum emotions’

LOSANGELES:SERENA Williams says she is suffering from “postpartum emotions” as the 23-time Grand Slam winner struggles to deal with juggling family life and tennis.

The 36-year-old American is seeking to regain her top form after missing most of the 2017 WTA season due to a pregnancy.

“I read several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to three years if not dealt with,” Williams said on Monday.

Williams’ disclosure comes a week after she suffered the worst loss of her career in San Jose, losing the final 12 games in a shocking 6-1, 6-0 first-round upset to unseeded Johanna Konta.

On Monday, she described her mindset at the time as being in a “funk”.

“Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal stuff, but I just was in a funk. Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom,” Williams wrote on Instagram.

RAONIC COMPLETES HOME DOUBLE

TORONTO: Milos Raonic was the second Canadian to win on Monday, joining Peter Polansky in the second round of the ATP Toronto Masters after a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of David Goffin.

Vasek Pospisil missed out on a local hat-trick in a night match as the Canadian lost to Croatian Borna Coric 6-4, 6-3 after a threehour rain interrupti­on.

World No 121 Polansky reached the second round for a third straight year, upsetting Australian world No 52 Matt Ebden 7-6(3), 6-4.

VENUS SURVIVES DOLEHIDE SCARE

TORONTO:VENUS Williams avoided an upset at the hands of fellow American Caroline Dolehide, holding off the 19-year-old 7-5, 6-1 to win her first round match at the Rogers Cup on Monday.

The only two other seeds in action during the opening day were ninth seed Karolina Pliskova and 10th seed Julia Goerges who both won.

Pliskova beat Katerina Siniakova 6-4 6-4 while Goerges overcame Timea Babos 3-6 7-6(3) 6-4.

BRADLEY KLAHN EARNS WILD CARD TO US OPEN

TORONTO:BRADLEY Klahn earned a wild card entry to the US Open on Monday with his win over David Ferrer in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The 27-year-old former NCAA champion will was out from February 2015 to November 2016 due to back surgeries. Klahn reached the second round of Wimbledon this year in his first appearance in a Grand Slam main draw in four years. RESULTS

LONDON: Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has warned the club not to sell France World Cup star Paul Pogba and instead to focus on strengthen­ing the squad.

Speculatio­n about the midfielder’s future is rife, with reports of interest from Barcelona, but Ferdinand has told executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward he must keep hold of the 25-year-old.
