INDIANORIGIN WOMEN’S CANCER EXPERT ELECTED TO TOP POSITION IN BRITAIN
LONDON: Sudha Sundar, a women’s cancer expert based at the University of Birmingham, has been elected president of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS), making her the first female gynaecological oncologist to be elected to the post. The BGCS is a society of professionals dedicated to improving the care provided to patients with gynaecological cancers. Sundar is a senior lecturer in Gynaecological Oncology at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the university, and is involved with research projects in India. In addition to her clinical and teaching work, Sundar’s research investigates clinical challenges in patients with ovarian and endometrial cancer.
Libya court sentences 45 to death over 2011 killings
BENGHAZI: A Libyan court has sentenced 45 people to death by firing squad over killings during the 2011 uprising that evolved into civil war. The conflict toppled and later killing the country’s longtime dictator Moammar Gaddhafi. Wednesday’s statement by the justice ministry says another 54 suspects in the case were sentenced to five years in prison while 22 people were acquitted.
Keita reelected Mali president with landslide
AP BAMAKO: Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been re-elected for a five-year term after winning a landslide in a runoff ballot, according to official figures on Thursday. Keita, 73, picked up 67.17% of the vote on Sunday against 32.83% for challenger and former finance minister Soumaila Cisse, 68, who also ran against Keita in 2013, the government announced. Turnout was low, at 34.5%.
Polish president vetoes law on EU Parliament elections
WARSAW: The Polish president has vetoed a law on elections to the European Union Parliament that would have benefited large political parties and made it harder for small parties to reach a threshold to get seats. Andrzej Duda said Thursday in announcing the veto that that the legislation would have left “a large number of citizens” without any representation in the European parliament and led to a decline in interest and turnout in European elections. Bulgaria to renovate bridges after Italy disaster
SOFIA : Bulgaria has decided to renovate more than 200 bridges in the wake of the collapse of a bridge in the Italian city of Genoa. A total of 211 bridges — most of which were built between 35 and 40 years ago — are in a bad state, the regional development minister told a government meeting, according to minutes published on Thursday.
