STUDENT DIES AFTER JUMPING OFF 11TH FLOOR

NAVI MUMBAI: An 18-year-old college student from Kamothe allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 11th floor of her building on Tuesday. According to police, she was rushed to MGM Hospital at Kamothe, but was declared dead on arrival. The deceased’s body was sent to Panvel Rural Hospital for a post-mortem and then handed over to the family. Police are yet to confirm the reason for the woman’s suicide.

Vajpayee’s ashes to be immersed in 11 Maha rivers

MUMBAI : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit will hold a meeting on Wednesday to pay homage to the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Mumbai at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai. Vajpayee’s ashes will be brought in an urn from Delhi to the city and will later be immersed in 11 state rivers, said finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwa­r on Tuesday. The state will set up an academic chair in the Vajpayee’s name at 13 universiti­es at a cost of ₹20 crore and will also fund 10 PH.D students.

Activists protest lack of change to women’s bill

MUMBAI: Around a week after the Union Cabinet cleared some amendments to the draft Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, and added bail provisions to it, women activists in the city protested the move and criticised the Centre for not making any actual changes while clearing the amendments.

Employee booked for cheating firm of ₹64 lakh

MUMBAI: NM Joshi Marg police registered a case against an employee of a private finance company for allegedly cheating his employer to the tune of ₹64 lakh. The accused collected cash from various shops, estimated to be ₹59,59,190 which was meant to be delivered to the office. An additional amount of ₹4.50 lakh was already in the van in which he took off.

2 women held for cheating businessma­n of ₹1.3 cr

THANE: Two women were arrested by the Thane commisione­rate for cheating a businessma­n Dipak Katira, 49, of ₹1.3 crore by luring him to invest in a bungalow project at Murbad in 2015. Yogita Sawaratkar, 33, and Chaya Mane, 58, stopped responding to Katira’s queries about the project, following which he lodged a police complaint went to the police.

4 held for robbing Bhiwandi family of ₹12 lakh

BHIWANDI : Thane crime branch arrested four people for stealing ₹12.1 lakh from a businessma­n’s home in Bhiwandi on August 2. Police recovered ₹3 lakh along with a four wheeler from the accused. On the night of August 2, the four accused wore masks and stormed in to the victim’s house. They were carrying weapons and other sharp objects with which they threatened the businessma­n and his family. The accused then took the family’s mobile phones, money and jewellery items.
