WITNESS IN KILLING OF UNNAO MINOR’S FATHER FOUND DEAD

LUCKNOW: The key witness in fatal attack on the father of a minor’s gang rape in Unnao, allegedly by the BJP MLA and his aides, was found dead at his home on August 18, police said. The girl’s uncle raised apprehensi­on over the death of Mohammed Yunus, 32, but police claimed that his family has cited illness as the cause of death. Yunus was the key witness in the case of murder of the girl’s father who was attacked allegedly by rape accused BJP MLA Kuldip Singh Sengar’s brother in police custody and had later died of his injuries. The father was jailed after allegedly being framed by the police in a false case of possession of illegal firearms.

Man sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping 3yearold girl

MATHURA: A special court sentenced a man to 20 years in jail for raping a three-year-old girl. Special POCSO court judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi called convict Vishambhar a paedophile and could repeat the crime in given a lesser punishment, assistant district government council Virendra Kumar Lavania said. “Vishambhar was also fined ~20,000,” he said. He raped the child on December 5, 2015 when she was out playing with her friends near her house.

1 killed, 4 injured in artillery shell explosion in Maharashtr­a

NASHIK: A 21-year-old man was killed and four others, including a child, were injured when an artillery shell exploded in a village in Maharashtr­a’s Nashik district, police said Thursday. Ajay Shirsath spotted the shell lying near a firing range close to his home at Belgaon Kurhe village Wednesday. He took the artillery shell and was trying to break its outer metal covering in the presence of other villagers when it exploded, killing him on the spot, the police officer added.

85 days later, protesters at Manipur Univ call off agitation

IMPHAL: The 85-day-long agitation at Manipur University was called off Thursday by the protesters “in the interest of the students”, Students’ Union president M Dayaman Singh said. The students had been demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor AP Pandey and the setting up of an Independen­t Enquiry Committee to look into the allegation­s of administra­tive and financial lapses made by the V-C. The agitation was called off after the HRD ministry agreed to the terms in the Memorandum of Agreement signed August 16, Singh said.
