Sondagar shines in world cerebral palsy Games
NEW DELHI: Twenty-three-yearold Delhi boy Divyesh Sondagar did India proud when he won two gold medals in the cerebral palsy world championships in Barcelona from August 6-11.
Son of a factory worker, Sondagar won the high-profile 100 and 200m sprints in the T-35 category.
The trip to Spain was not easy. With no funds to support him – even the Delhi government looked the other way – Sondagar banked on friends and family members to raise money for his maiden international competition. Coached by Kailash, Sondagar qualified for the world meet when he did well at the nationals in Nandiad (Gujarat) from April 28-29.
Having won at Barcelona, Sondagar now dreams of taking part in the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. “I have not done anything historic but all I can say is that nothing is impossible,” said the athlete, who wore spikes on a synthetic track for the first time.
