NAVI MUMBAI: In view of the widespread violence during the Maratha protests last month, the Navi Mumbai police are taking measures to ensure that peace prevails in the city during the upcoming festivals.

The police organised a meeting with several groups at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium on Monday, after there were rumours making rounds during the protests to disrupt peaceful celebrations in the city.

Members of the festival organising committees, leaders of different groups, social activists and a huge number of college students and youngsters were invited to the meeting, where the police interacted with them to create a better social understanding among the citizens.

Sudhakar Pathare, deputy commissioner of police (zone I), said, “The inner current of different communities cannot be taken lightly after the violence that took place only a month ago. As a law enforcement agency, we cannot take any chances. Therefore, to ensure that peace prevails in the city, we invited people from different backgrounds and tried to create an understanding among them,” he said.

“We urge people to enjoy the festivals with their friends and family members without having feeling of hatred against anyone,” said Anil Deshmukh, senior police inspector , Vashi police.

Mathadi leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLA) Narendra Patil, who was also present at the event, said, “We may get dissatisfied with the government for some reason. But there shouldn’t be any hatred among us. People should never violate the norms during the festivals and even after that.”
