Two donate organs of kin, save 3 lives
MUMBAI: The son of a woman, who was declared brain dead at a Mahim hospital, donated his mother’s liver on Thursday that saved the life of a patient with end-stage organ failure. This was the second cadaver donation in the city in the last two days.
The 61-year-old woman from Rajasthan had suffered intracranial bleeding, said the organ transplant coordinator at PD Hinduja Hospital, Mahim, where she had been admitted since August 27.
The patient had a history of hypertension. Her son agreed to donate her organs after family
members convinced him to do so.
Meanwhile, the daughter of a 54-year-old woman donated her mother’s organs on August 29,
helping two patients. Ashwini Tiwari, 23, a retail sales officer, said her mother, Ujwala, suddenly collapsed while having tea on the day of Rakshaban- dhan.
Doctors at Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle, said she had suffered a stroke and declared her brain dead. Ashwini said she had learnt about organ donation in a poem she had learnt in school, which prompted her to convince her family to go ahead with the decision. “My mother was helpful and even while leaving she has helped other patients,” said Tiwari. The organs — kidney and liver—were donated to patients with end-stage organ failure. According to Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee, this was the 34th cadaver donation between January 1 and August 30. Figures were the same for the corresponding period last year.
