NCP TO APPOINT ‘INCHARGE’ FOR EVERY ASSEMBLY SEAT FOR 2019

- Faisal Malik

MUMBAI : With the 2019 elections approaching, the Sharad Pawarled Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) decided to adopt a new formula for poll preparations. The party will appoint an in-charge for each assembly constituency in Maharashtra to monitor the implementation of the party’s election programme. The decision was taken in the newly formed state executive committee meeting held on Thursday.

“We decided to appoint an in-charge for each assembly constituency from where the party will be contesting in the polls. The in-charge will oversee the implementation of the party’s poll programme in his or her respective constituency so that best results can be achieved,” said a senior leader from NCP.

Incidentally, the same formula has also been adopted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has been following the model for years.

So far, a senior leader from the party used to be appointed as in-charge for one district, who had to look after polls preparations of all the assembly constituencies coming under it. However, NCP leaders are unsure if the same model will be adopted for the Lok Sabha elections, as they believe the decision may create practical issues.

“Senior leaders like Supriya Sule, Chhagan Bhujbal, Sunil Tatkare among others will be contesting LS polls. In such a scenario, it would be very difficult to appoint an in-charge for their constituencies,” he said.

Pawar has informed Congress president Rahul Gandhi that it is keen to contest on equal number of seats in upcoming polls.
