LALU SURRENDERS, SENT TO HOSPITAL FROM PRISON

RANCHI: A special CBI court in Ranchi sent Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and fodder scam convict Lalu Prasad to jail after he surrendere­d before it on terminatio­n of the provisiona­l bail period on Thursday. Later in the day, the Birsa Munda Central Jail authoritie­s shifted him to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences here for medical examinatio­n. On May 11, Jharkhand high court had granted Prasad six weeks provisiona­l bail on health grounds for specialise­d treatment at a Mumbai-based hospital. It had also extended the bail period thrice. The court, however, on August 25 had rejected Prasad’s request for further extension and directed him to surrender. Prasad reached Ranchi court premises at 11 am and surrendere­d before the court of special judge SS Prasad.

Rusticated Class 10 student shoots at principal: Police

LUCKNOW: A 16-year-old boy allegedly shot at his school principal in Syohara locality of Bijnor district on Thursday after being rusticated for violent behaviour, police said. The principal is said be out of danger, they added. Station officer (SO), Syohara, Arihant Kumar said Sanjeev Kumar, the principal had rusticated a student of Class 10 after finding out that he was involved in a clash. “The rusticated boy met the principal on Thursday and apologised. However, the principal refused to revoke his decision,” the SO said. Kumar added that the boy went home, returned to school with a firearm and opened fire on the principal. “He (the boy) tried to flee but was nabbed by the school staff and handed over to the police,” Kumar said.

UP assembly approves bill to restore anticipato­ry bail

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh assembly on Thursday approved a key bill that will pave the way for re-introducti­on of the provision of anticipato­ry bail, which was revoked in the state during the Emergency in 1976. The Code of Criminal Procedure (Uttar Pradesh Amendment) Bill, 2018, aims at restoring the provision of anticipato­ry bail in the state. The bill will be sent to the Union government for final approval as it proposes
