MUMBAI : Three doctors from Mumbai were injured when a bus carrying them to a medical conference to Aurangabad, hit a truck near Ahmednagar on Saturday. Officials from Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) said that the accident happened around 3:30am. While three doctors received severe injuries, others had bruises and lacerations.

Dr Unmesh Mukherjee, a third-year junior resident doctor at TMH said that most passengers were sleeping when the incident happened. “A loud thud woke us up. It felt like we were going down-hill,” he said. “Once we realised the bus had hit a truck in the front, we tried opening the exit,” he said.

Doctors who were on board said it took them around 15 minutes to open the main and the emergency exit of the bus.

According to Dr Siddhartha Laskar, professor, department of radiation oncology TMH, three doctors have been “significantly” injured.

One of the injured, Dr Pushkar Ingale, had multiple fractures on the face and was shifted to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, which he had joined a month ago.

Dr Anil Tibdewal, assistant professor, radiation oncology, TMH suffered a rib fracture.

Dr Johny Carlton, junior resident, radiation oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital passed out, said a senior TMH doctor. They were all taken to BARC Hospital.

A green corridor was set up for two ambulances for carrying three doctors who were severely injured, said the doctors present at the spot. Dr Rahul Visariya, a former doctor at TMH, who was in the bus, said, he had abrasions on his hand and knee. “I was sitting on the second last seat and got thrown two seats ahead, with the jerk.” “Nearly 50% of the doctors, who were in the bus needed to undergo CT scan,” he said.
