THE CYBER CRIMINAL USED THE NAME AND PHOTO OF ANOTHER WOMAN TO CREATE THE PROFILES

MUMBAI: A 33-year-old housewife from Dahisar (East) received obscene voice calls and Whatsapp video calls from unknown men after an unidentified cyber criminal created fake profiles of her on social networking platforms and shared her contact number there.

Police said the woman had been receiving calls from August 4 till August 28 from unknown men who were told that she is a commercial sex worker.

When the woman asked one of the callers who had given him her contact number, he told her he had got it from Facebook. Another caller said he got her number from Instagram. The callers said the profiles they got the woman’s number from had the same name.

The victim later found out that the cyber criminal had used the name and photo of another woman to create the profiles but had given the victim’s contact number, asking people to call for sex chats.

The woman told police that her husband had been using the number for six years and she had been using it of late. As her husband’s family had opposed their marriage and had cut off all ties with him, she suspected that one of them could be behind the calls. However, when the husband confronted his family members, they denied any involvement.

The couple then filed a complaint with the Dahisar police station last week. The police lodged a first information report (FIR) for molestation and sexual harassment under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology (IT) Act.
