Owner of a petrol pump, who got duo to carry out renovation work, out of ICU; attackers arrested within 24 hrs

MUMBAI: The Juhu police had recently arrested two labourers for allegedly assaulting a 74-year-old senior citizen at his residence last week. On August 30, Upendra Choksi, an owner of a petrol pump, had called up an agency in Goregaon to ask for two workers to carry out minor renovation work at his flat.

The same day, at 1:30pm, two labourers, Ejaz Shaha, 25, and Shahbaz Shaha, 20, who are also brothers, were sent for the work.

According to the police, Choksi had asked the labourers to work properly, which irked Shahbaz who then repeatedly hit Choksi on his head with a hammer while Ejaz held the senior citizen’s hand.

Shahbaz hit Choksi till he fell on the floor and then Choksi’s wife, who is a doctor, and their domestic help, rushed into the room.

When they saw Choksi lying on the floor, the domestic help tried to get hold of the accused but they escaped.

Police launched a manhunt as soon a report of the incident was lodged.

They got in touch with the agency that sent the labourers and eventually alerted their informers in the area. At 3.30pm, Choksi tells the labourers to do the work properly. Angry, Shahbaz charges at Choksi with his hammer, while Ejaz holds his hands.

After getting a tip off that one of the brothers was going to meet a friend near Vile Parle station, the police arrested Ejaz on the evening of August 30.
