Manjit wants place in TOPS after Asiad gold

NEW DELHI : Asian Games gold medallist Manjit Singh, who doesn’t have a regular job, on Tuesday requested the sports ministry to include him in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to prepare for the upcoming big events like the 2020 Tokyo Games. Manjit was left without a job in March 2016 after the ONGC refused to extend his contract as he was not producing results.

“I don’t have any sponsor or any company giving me assistance. I am hoping that the Sports Ministry will include me in the TOP Scheme so that I can continue training,” Manjit said.

TOOR LOSES FATHER

MOGA: Days after his son Tajinderpa­l Singh Toor’s gold-winning feat at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Moga resident Karam Singh died after a prolonged battle with cancer at an army hospital in Panchkula on Monday evening. The grieving shot-putter said he regretted not being able to show his Asiad gold medal to his father but added that he felt satisfied to have fulfilled his father’s dream of seeing him bag the top prize.

GILL MAINTAINS LEAD

DAVANGERE, KARNATAKA : Threetime APRC champion Gaurav Gill continued to hold on to the top position of the leaderboar­d after yet another power-packed performanc­e in the 10th Edition of Dakshin Dare after Day 2 here on Tuesday.

The Mahindra Adventure racer, along with co-driver Musa Sherif, won all three Special Stages and one Super Special Stage. His teammate Philippos Matthai came in second.

TYSON TO VISIT MUMBAI

MUMBAI: American heavyweigh­t boxing legend Mike Tyson will set foot on Indian shores for the first time later this month to attend the first fight night of the upcoming mixed martial arts league titled Kumite 1 League .

The league supported by the All India Mixed Martial Arts Federation and World Kickboxing Federation will see eight teams representi­ng various nations.

NORRIS AIMS TO EMULATE HAMILTON

LONDON: Lando Norris has set his sights on emulating world champion Lewis Hamilton as the British teenager prepares to make Formula One history.

Norris, 18, has been signed to drive for Mclaren for the 2019 season, making him the youngest Briton in the event and he hasearned comparison with his superstar compatriot .

“It’s nice to be compared to such a good driver. I have admired Lewis since I started watching Formula One because I know how a good a driver he is and I know how hard it is,” Norris said.
