Demonetised notes worth ₹85L seized in Vashi, 10 detained
NAVI MUMBAI: Demonetised currency notes worth ₹85 lakh were seized from two cars on Sion-panvel highway at Vashi on Thursday night. Police have detained ten people including two women in the case.
Anil Survase, a sub-inspector from the crime branch, had received a tip-off about a few people carrying huge amount of demonetised currency notes to place under the flyover near Vashi Plaza around 11pm.
The police saw the accused alighting out of two cars. They passed some signs to each other, indicating them to assemble at a point on the road.
Vijay Kadvane, police inspector from the crime branch, said, “When our officers accosted them, we found demonetised notes worth ₹85 lakh in their possession. They had no documents to validate why they were carrying such a huge amount of cash, which are not even in circulation anymore. Therefore, we detained the men but let the women go, as we could not detain them at night. The women were asked to report to our office on Friday morning,” Kadvane said.
Kadvane said all the seized notes consisted notes of ₹1,000. “The accused had come from different parts of the city and Mumbai. They have small businesses or are employees of private companies. All the women are homemakers,” he said.
Police registered a non-cognisable offence against the accused. “Prima facie it appears these people were planning to exchange the demonetised notes. We have not been able to gather information about who are the people who would have helped them get the demonetised currency exchanged,” Kadvane said.
Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said, “We informed the income tax department about the seized notes. They will do the needful.”
