DRIVER LYNCHED AFTER TRUCK CRUSHES CHILD

DUMKA: A truck driver was Sunday lynched by a mob in Jharkhand’s Dumka district after his vehicle ran over and killed a two-year-old child, police said. The child, identified as Subit Marandi, was crushed under the wheels of the truck at Simanijore village near National Highway114­a in the district around 3 pm, they said. The incident happened near the boy’s house in the village when he was walking on the road with his sister, police said. Shikaripar­a police station in-charge Manoj Kumar Thakur said the mob caught the driver, Mohan Rai, and thrashed him to death following the accident. The driver was a resident of Motihari district in Bihar, he said.

Man with name missing from NRC commits suicide

GUWAHATI: A daily wage earner whose name didn’t figure in the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) committed suicide in Assam’s Baksa district on Sunday, police said. The body of 37-year-old Binoy Chand was found hanging from a tree at his house in Dimlarpar village. No suicide note was found. Some reports said he committed suicide after failing to get the name of his mother, who had been declared a doubtful voter, cleared in a foreigners’ tribunal . The police, however, say Binoy may have taken the extreme step due to poverty. “It seems he committed suicide due to financial problems. He got married last year and the birth of a child recently added to the family’s burdens,” said Baka SP Binoy Kalita.

4 held for fake message on virus outbreak in Kolkata

KOLKATA: The criminal Investigat­ion Department (CID) of West Bengal Police on Saturday night arrested three members of a Whatsapp group and one more person for spreading a fake message on outbreak of ‘Morphine Virus’ in the state, police said. The CID initiated a probe Friday night and traced the message to a Whatsapp group “Bangaon Local”. Three group administra­tors Amit Dutta, Avi Kundu and Abrajit Roy were arrested on Saturday night. Another member, Sanjib Biswas, was arrested for forwarding the message to more than 200 Whatsapp users. According to the CID, the fake message was attributed to state government.
