Maradona lands in Mexico, receives rousing reception

CULIACAN: Diego Maradona arrived to a hero’s welcome in Mexico on Saturday as the new technical director of second division Dorados landed in the relative footballin­g outpost of Culiacan.

“Welcome Golden God! Thank you God, thank you Maradona!” read one of the placards held by fans greeting him at the Culiacan airport. Dressed all in black but wearing a gold, white and black Dorados scarf, Maradona didn’t speak to any of the dozens of fans welcoming him.

Accompanie­d by club officials and his lawyer, Maradona wasted little time negotiatin­g the sea of fans and journalist­s and being whisked off to meet his new players.

MAGUIRE SIGNS NEW DEAL WITH LEICESTER

LONDON:ENGLAND defender Harry Maguire has signed a new fiveyear contract with Leicester, the club announced on Sunday.

The 25-year-old joined Leicester from Hull in 2017 and played every minute of their Premier League campaign last season before helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals.

Maguire, reportedly the subject of interest from Manchester United during the recent transfer window, said on Leicester’s website: “Ever since I came to this club, I’ve always reiterated how good they’ve been to me.” defender Simeone spent two years as a player with Inter, whom he joined from Atletico Madrid in 1997, winning a Serie A title and the UEFA Cup.

“Diego said it too, sooner or later, he’ll end up at Inter,” said Natalia. “Inter is a team that he would like to coach so much, but he has remained very close to Lazio, too.”

ONE KILLED, 40 INJURED IN STAMPEDE

ANTANANARI­VO, MADAGASCAR: One person died and 40 were injured in a stampede before kick-off at an African Nations Cup qualifier between Madagascar and Senegal in Antananari­vo on Sunday.

Local hospital officials confirmed the fatality after fans tried to enter an already full Stade Municipal de Mahamasina in the country’s capital ahead of the eagerly-awaited fixture.

Spectators had been queuing outside the venue since early morning for the afternoon kickoff and once the 22,000 capacity venue was full officials closed the gates with hundreds still hoping to get in. “The supporters wanted to get in but the gate was closed because the stands were full,” police chief Herilalati­ana Andrianari­saona said.

BENDTNER REPORTED TO POLICE FOR ATTACK

COPENHAGEN:NIKLAS Bendtner has been reported to the police by a Copenhagen taxi driver who claims the Danish football star was behind a violent attack early on Sunday.

The taxi driver had undergone surgery for a broken jaw, a spokesman for taxi firm Dantaxa told Reuters. Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet cited unnamed sources saying Bendtner was arrested early on Sunday, charged with violence, but later released by the police.

Bendtner currently plays for Norwegian side Rosenborg but was not picked for the Danish national team that later on Sunday plays against Wales.
