Transplant panel initiates probe into three failed organ donations
Sometimes, it happens that a donor may have an underlying problem that no one might be aware of at the time of organ retrieval. DR BHARAT SHAH, nephrologist and member of ZTCC
MUMBAI:ZONAL Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) initiated a probe into a case, in which organs from a 59-year-old donor were rejected by all three recipients.
“This is the rarest of the rare cases,” said Dr Ravindra Karanjekar, vice-president, ZTCC. Members of ZTCC executive council of discussed the case on Wednesday.
Dr Bharat Shah, nephrologist and a member of ZTCC, said, “Sometimes, it happens that a donor may have an underlying problem that no one might be aware of at the time of organ retrieval. However, issues come to the fore only after a transplant. What happened in this case seems like an accident and is unfortunate. We are in the proc- ess of securing information from all the hospitals.”
ZTCC will set up an independent committee comprising hepatologist, nephrologist and a transplant immunologist, which will scrutinise medical reports of the donor and the recipients.
Dr Ravi Mohenka, liver transplant surgeon at Global Hospital, said while rejection of an organ is common, it is a rare case wherein organs from a single donor are
rejected by all the recipients.
WHAT HAPPENED
Family of the brain dead man admitted at PD Hinduja Hospital, Mahim, agreed to donate his kidneys and liver on September 4. While one kidney was transplanted into a recipient at the same hospital, the other one was transplanted at Jaslok Hospital. The liver was given to patient at Global Hospital, Parel.
However, the kidney recipient at PD Hinduja Hospital died within hours after the transplant. The patient at Jaslok Hospital, who received the second kidney, rejected it and was put on ventilator.
Even the third recipient, who got the liver, rejected the organ and underwent a transplant after receiving liver from another brain dead patient. This was confirmed to HT by ZTCC officials.
