Hamilton grabs pole for Singapore GP

SINGAPORE: Lewis Hamilton scorched to Singapore Grand Prix pole position in his Mercedes with a red hot lap of 1min 36.015sec at the Marina Bay street circuit on Saturday.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull will start on the front row for Sunday’s race alongside Hamilton after coming second, 0.319sec behind the Englishman, but Sebastian Vettel could only manage third. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas will join Vettel on the second row of the grid.

Kimi Raikkonen was fifth in the second Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo, who has finished runner-up for the past three years in Singapore, was sixth fastest.

MAYWEATHER TO FACE PACQUIAO IN REMATCH

LAS VEGAS: Former world welterweig­ht champion Floyd Mayweather said on Saturday he will face Manny Pacquiao later this year in a rematch of their 2015 superfight. In a post on Instagram, Mayweather said he will come out of retirement to fight Pacquiao, three years after scoring a comfortabl­e points victory over the veteran Filipino.

GOLD FOR JYOTI, SARITA ENDS WITH BRONZE

NEW DELHI: Jyoti Gulia on Saturday picked up India’s lone gold medal in the youth category of the Silesian Open Boxing Tournament for women in which the juniors ruled with 13 medals and senior pro L Sarita Devi (60kg) ended with a bronze in Gliwice, Poland.

NEW DELHI: Sakshi Malik entered final of the 62kg category of the Medved Internatio­nal wrestling tournament in Minsk, Belarus. Pooja Dhanda, however, was ousted in the quarter-finals after losing 0-10 to Battsetseg Altantsets­eg in the 57kg category.
