MUMBAI: A 44-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly duping a woman of ₹1.02 crore. The accused, Arif Anzarwala, convinced the complainant to take a loan by mortgaging her flat in Byculla.

Arif’s brother-in-law, Ashfaq and wife, Nusrat are also wanted in the case.

The complainant lives in Byculla with her daughter. Her husband died from a lung disease in 2008.

In 2014, she sold her Mazgaon flat to the accused’s sister Rubina for ₹2.02 crore. She later bought a flat at Bellasis Road in Byculla.

Arif then befriended the complainant and the two entered into a relationship. Arif promised marriage to the complainant.

“Arif first borrowed ₹30 lakh from the complainant as he wanted money for his business. He then borrowed ₹12 lakh in order to aid Ashfaq’s business. The complainant trusted Arif and so helped him financially,” said an officer from the Nagpada police station.

Later, Arif and his wife asked for ₹60 lakh from the complainant for the expansion of their company M/s Mascot Umbrella. When she said she did not have that much money, the duo convinced her to take a loan against her residence.

“In order to get the loans approved, Arif submitted bogus documents including Gumasta license, income tax filing, and an agreement copy. The loan was then sanctioned to his company,” said a police source.

According to the complainant, Arif started defaulting on the loan repayment after paying the EMI (equated monthly instalment) for the first few months.

After the complainant followed up with the accused persistently, he threatened to defame her by publishing their private photos and videos on Facebook.

The complainant then lodged a complaint at the Nagapada police station for cheating, forgery and threatening.

Cops are on the lookout for Nusrat and Ashfaq, and are trying to recover the money from the arrested accused.
