MUMBAI: After the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) set up an inquiry to look into a “rare” medical case, where the donor’s organs were rejected by the recipients’ bodies, another patient, who had received a kidney from the same donor, died on Tuesday morning.

The 60-year old patient, who died, was admitted at Jaslok Hospital and was on ventilator following the kidney transplant. The kidney was from a 59-yearold donor, whose organs were harvested at PD Hinduja Hospital on September 4.

Another recipient, who had received the other kidney from the same donor had died on September 5, after which, the ZTCC set up a committee to look into the case as it was “rare” for all recipients to develop immunological reactions following transplant of organs from the same donor.

The inquiry committee met on Wednesday for the first time.

“They looked at paper work and have ordered further investigation to see if there was any underlying condition in the donor or the recipients,” said Dr Bharat Shah, nephrologist, who is a member of the ZTCC.

Theztcclaunchedaninquiry into the case, where organs from a 59-year-old brain-dead donor were rejected by all three recipients. The liver was used for a transplant at Global Hospital, Parel, after which the patient developed a ‘medical reaction’. Doctors then used a liver from another donor for the patient.

Dr Ravi Mohenka, liver transplant surgeon at Global Hospital, said rejection of one organ is common, but he hasn’t seen a case where all organs were rejected.
