MUMBAI: The Agripada police on Monday arrested a 60-year-old man for allegedly molesting his nine-year-old granddaughter in a south Mumbai hospital.

According to the Agripada police, the victim, who is from Hingoli in rural Maharashtra, had lost her mother a year ago.

Since her father was unemployed and her grandfather could not support her financially, she was sent to an orphanage. The officers said authorities at the orphanage discovered that she had a hole in her heart. Through an NGO’S recommendation, she was brought to Mumbai and admitted to a private hospital in Agripada.

“Since the girl’s father was unavailable, her grandfather was asked to stay at the hospital,” said S Agawane, senior police inspector of Agripada police station.

The officers said that on Monday at 1.30am, the girl ran outside her ward and approached the night nurses. “She was taught about good touch and bad touch so she told our nurses that her grandfather’s touch felt bad following which she pushed him and ran out to get help. Our nurses immediately took action and told the man to leave the premises,” said a doctor from the hospital.

The nurses then informed the authorities the police registered a first information report (FIR).

“The man has been arrested for outraging the modesty of a minor, and booked under various sections of the Protection of Children Form Sexual Offences Act (POCSO),” said Agawane. For now, the NGO has been asked to look after the girl.
